Revert c0ae87cb850cd2e3f11ddb3aac9e0787d25263a2

I was foolishly thinking lc_value was the result of all this error checking,
not lang_variables. (Too many merges between silencing initial warning output
when run on Mac OS X, and Michael's subsequent two commits). Sorry 4 D noise.
