This is a MythTV cmake issue. Separating building from
installing (like the existing configure script does) is what
the majority of other projects that use cmake have done
(because it is the right way to do things). This is, in my
opinion, a requirement to move to cmake only (and is
also required by some packaging best practices, which
separate build steps from install steps, i.e. cmake --build
and cmake --install needing to operate independently
in different parts of the packaging solution). There
are typically workarounds for the lack of proper
cmake options, but they are workarounds for a
broken implementation. I seem to recall I mentioned
this years ago, but I can't find that comment.
Anyone who wishes to remove configure should
consider providing PR's to fix the cmake scripts
so that the functionality is actually equivalent
(i.e. --build and --install work independently).
I will also point out that only fools build as root,
and only those whose goal is to compromise your
system(s) tell you to build as root.
Also, as I recall, cmake cannot be used with project
tarballs if git is install as the makefiles fail to determine
a version (the scripting presumes that if git is installed,
it can use various git commands, even when it is not
in a git repository). That is probably easy to fix, but,
it too, probably needs to be validated (it was a long
time ago I looked at that), and if it is still a problem,
fixed.
