Are you able to make sure that ffplay and mythffplay are using vdpau? I 
suspect they may not be using any hardware acceleration. MythTV also 
plays fine with no hardware acceleration. ffplay does not support the 
-hwaccel option that is available with ffmpeg.

You can add -sst 0 option to ffplay to prevent the videotext from showing.
