Comcast, historically, left the OTAs in the format they received them in
(and that typically meant ABC, Fox in 720p, NBC, CBS, CW in 1080i).
Comcast has (reportedly) starting local transcoding to a non-interlaced
standard in some parts of the country. This would appear to be (mostly)
to support their IPTV devices and services, which, surprise, surprise,
typically can only do crappy de-interlacing, and the Harmonic's of
the world can do much much better real time (hardware MCDI)
de-interlacing than the device someone typically has in their hands,
or the cost optimized pucks that Comcast wishes to make available,
or the Roku or Samsung apps. The reports suggest this is happening
by region, and not yet everywhere.
