The working rule(s) for the minimum OS version we target, and therefore
aim to keep working, is the following

- the most recent ubuntu LTS release (currently 14.04)
- the current debian stable release (currently jessie)
- the current - 1 fedora release (currently f22)

if it still works on older releases then that is a bonus.

According to our smolt data, 84% of our ubuntu users are running 14.04
and the rest a mix between 12.x, 13.x, 14.10 & 15.x
