Having access to some of the features of QT 5 is also a nice benefit. *5.2 was selected as the minimum version as this is the lowest version offered by all distros we surveyed. We won't rule out a move to a more recent version, i.e. 5.4 which is already available for most distros sometime before the release. We're on the hunt for bugs caused by the switch to QT 5 and this is something you can help us with. So please make sure you're ready for the switch, the earlier you start the transition to QT 5 the smoother the process will be. -- Stuart Morgan MythTV From stuarta at squashedfrog.net Mon Mar 2 11:29:19 2015 From: stuarta at squashedfrog.net (Stuart Auchterlonie) Date: Mon, 02 Mar 2015 11:29:19 +0000 Subject: [mythtv] Announcement: Master/0.28 is moving to QT 5.2 In-Reply-To: <71290247.7gtkMRDJof@scafell> References: <71290247.7gtkMRDJof@scafell> Message-ID: <54F4498F.7090608@squashedfrog.net> On 01/03/15 10:47, Stuart Morgan wrote: > Within the next couple of weeks we will be switching the minimum QT version > from 4.8 to 5.2* > > QT 4 goes End of Life at the end of this year and so we want our next release, > the one users will be using past this deadline to be built on QT 5. Consider it a tech preview. Some stuff works, quite a lot doesn't We have no plans to port the changes in master back to 0.27 as they are quite extensive. Message-ID: <20150302133945.23920@web005.roc2.bluetie.com> Hi, Hauppauge has released an open source Linux driver for its HD PVR 2 model 1512, capable of capturing a 1080p video stream over HDMI. ftp://ftp.hauppauge.com/Support/Test/Lin/hauppauge_driver_src_ver5.tgz This is the only personal video recorder on the market that can capture full HD video at 30 fps (1080p30) over HDMI and that has an open source Linux driver. It would be great to have this driver merged upstream so that it works with Linux out of the box. Could anyone ask the kernel developers on the linux-media list (http://www.linuxtv.org/lists.php) if they would be interested in porting it? Could anyone ask the kernel developers on the linux-media list (http://www.linuxtv.org/lists.php) if they would be interested in porting it? There is nothing to merge. You would have to start from scratch actually writing a driver. All this thing does is use libusb to talk to the device over USB from user space. There is no driver at all (although an empty directory in the tar file named 'Driver' does exist). It may however provide enough information to create a driver. Much better than nothing. -- Len Sorensen From dhighley at highley-recommended.com Mon Mar 2 22:20:56 2015 From: dhighley at highley-recommended.com (David Highley) Date: Mon, 2 Mar 2015 14:20:56 -0800 (PST) Subject: [mythtv] Transcoding has quit working 27.4 Message-ID: <201503022220.t22MKuU7012686@douglas.highley-recommended.com> Trans coding seems to be broken for some recordings. We do two trans codes; one is just to cut commercials and the other is to trans code to H264 format. For some recordings they have stopped working and the symptoms are different. In the second case it drops all frames because of a constant shift between the audio and video. Seems to be the HD programs and not the ones translated to HD by the cable or TV programming. This had been working up till the 27.4 update. Separate question/issue. Would have posted this on the new forums, but egg on face, did not save the user id and password. When I go to the forgot password page and put in my email address it says it does not know about it. When I try to register it blocks me because the email is already in use. Seems to be no way to contact the forum administrators to resolve the issue:-( =================================================== - trans code to cut commercials, auto trans code: 2015-02-26 19:55:08.177630 C [24201/24201] thread_unknown mythcommandlineparser.cpp:2595 (ConfigureLogging) - So please make sure you're ready for the switch Could you set expectations for people with things like what you mean by ?ready? and should we expect current master to be usable for production or is it a total crap shoot at this point. Also, would you feel master to be solid if you?re on qt4 libraries? How much testing was done before this announcement? I took the plunge and the build went smoothly enough. For folks on Debian it?s enough to install qt5-default libqt5webkit5-dev qtscript5-dev libqt5sql5-mysql and they?ll cause most of the qt4 packages to be removed due to conflicts. I used apt-show-versions to tell me what other qt4 packages were around and I removed those manually. A database change was committed in mid February so people coming from builds before that will have a little extra effort should they decide to back off and return to qt4. Nothing too major, the update was to add tables named users, user_permissions, and user_sessions so you can drop those and decrement the schema number and any recordings you made while testing qt5 will be preserved. The first few times I ran the backend it failed to back up the database. There was no reason given in the backend log nor did the backup script make any effort to give one. When I stepped through it in gdb the backup, and db upgrade, worked OK and continued doing so when I reran outside of gdb. Who knows. The frontend came up OK and navigated through menus and queued new recordings successfully. I tried to play back a recording but the log filled with endless ?QOpenGLContext::swapBuffers() called with non-exposed window, behavior is undefined? messages. There?s context here:http://pastebin.com/z4RnRC5F . I?m using vaapi with an ivy bridge i7?s built-in video and the recording was an hd mpeg2 atsc recording. I wasn?t able to get anywhere with gdb on the frontend but did stop it while it was spewing messages and took a stack trace FWIW, it?s at http://pastebin.com/VXrLSMg7 . My first attempt at recording failed due to tuning errors but that might be due to weather issues (I?m on OTA). Subsequently I started recordings for on each of my 5 tuners, some of them using both virtual tuners, for a total of 8 simultaneous. Recording seems to pass the basic stink test. Losing playback makes this a non-starter so I?m rolling back. If you want anything specific tested in the next 24 hours I can probably accommodate that otherwise it?ll be after the weekend. - George -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... On a scale of 0x0 to 0x7, it is likely a 0x5. But master has always been wibbly wobbly regarding "ready". It is called "unstable/development" for a reason. Mostly it is good. Sometimes there are rough spots. The rough spots get fixed, but you might get unlucky with the timing and pull at just the wrong time, and encounter some serious issues. Caveat Emptor. In particular, right now, there were/are some reported segfaults that are actually due to real code bugs that (apparently) in Qt4 happened to work (most of the time?) but in Qt5, not so much. I would not be surprised to know that some of the random segfaults that have been reported over the years are related to this (timing, and race conditions, are everything). There are likely more such in the code. Testing by users of the various code paths are a useful tool. > Also, would you feel master to be solid if you?re on qt4 libraries? It is intended that RSN new code will be added to utilize the (new) Qt5 features/constructs such that master will not build on Qt4. There will be no (intentional) effort to insure that master builds on a Qt4 base (previously you may find code in master/fixes that was intended to work on either version of Qt). I would plan accordingly. And remember, the bugs being identified with Qt5 are real bugs. You might have gotten lucky with Qt4, but the bugs are real. There are bugs e.g. #12394, thankfully they are few in number. There are also likely to be issues which are subtle, or in areas of the code which don't get used much or by many people which have so far gone undetected. So while it's very stable, you should still keep your guard up and periodically check that everything you take for granted has actually worked. -- Stuart Morgan From warpme at o2.pl Sat Mar 7 18:52:02 2015 From: warpme at o2.pl (Warpme) Date: Sat, 07 Mar 2015 19:52:02 +0100 Subject: [mythtv] Announcement: Master/0.28 is moving to QT 5.2 In-Reply-To: <2837127.mGJt7edtLz@scafell> References: <71290247.7gtkMRDJof@scafell> <54FAEDD2.1050402@o2.pl> <2837127.mGJt7edtLz@scafell> Message-ID: <54FB48D2.501@o2.pl> On 07/03/15 14:27, Stuart Morgan wrote: > On Saturday 07 Mar 2015 13:23:46 Warpme wrote: >> I just moved Minimyth2 to Qt5.4.1 and I must say it is impressive how >> Devs managed this transition! >> So far I tested only frontend functions and ALL works perfectly (at >> least I wasn't able to discover broken FE functions by move to Qt5). >> Next days I'll be preparing Qt5 packages for backend and will give test >> run for BE - but looking how well FE is working - I don't expect any >> problems with BE. > There are bugs e.g. #12394, thankfully they are few in number. > > There are also likely to be issues which are subtle, or in areas of the code > which don't get used much or by many people which have so far gone undetected. > So while it's very stable, you should still keep your guard up and > periodically check that everything you take for granted has actually worked. > Hmm - before my post about mythtv with Qt5 stability I checked also this ticket. The Mar 2 commit to programinfo.h seems to be the culprit. Can you suggest what is wrong? I suspect that it needs RecStatus class moced and linkable before this can work. however libmyth is not build at this point in the compile. And yes I did a dist clean build (fresh clone). Resolved my problem. Cant see how it works for other builds as its dependent on libmyth (programtypes.cpp and mostly its moc for enum to string conversion). Workaround is in libmythservicecontracts.pro (add to bottom) HEADERS += ../libmyth/programtypes.h SOURCES += ../libmyth/programtypes.cpp LIBS += -L../libmythbase -lmythbase-$${LIBVERSION} libmythbase is required as a dep for mythdate not the best solution but keeps me moving forward as there are now 2 copies of RecStatus in 2 different libs but cant be helped (ATM) due to a circular lib dep between the 2 libs. if the services is the only class that requires enum to string, define the enum in programtypes.h and create the helper class in this lib using a typedef for the enum def. Brad, thanks for having a go at this. It is on my todo list to start testing master on OSX with QT5. But I'm not going to get at it for some weeks. I believe you are right--the hack [1] isn't necessary anymore. [1] https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/34b9f3b64c6d6ef1518658ce6d33eb9a691fad30 Since OS X 10.6 (I believe), OS X does not permit programs to daemon(). The appropriate way to run mythbackend is via launchd. I think the above commit should be reverted. It's failing to find 2 of the libraries it needs to link. Can you a) open a ticket in trac, filed under "Qt5 Issues" b) run the following, and add the output to the ticket - locate libicui18n.so.53 - locate libicuuc.so.53 - /opt/Qt5.4.1/5.4/gcc_64/bin/qmake -query > install prefix /usr > runtime prefix /usr Whilst these may make it seem like the same error, this normally causes the build to error out before it has even built the libraries, not during linking of the binaries. I don't think it's the solution to your problem, but you might want to think about upgrading to something that didn't EOL two years ago. I'd like to add support for Bookmarks but the Service API doesn't seem to provide a way to get/set marks. Even if I added that it looks like marks are stored as frames and not as timestamps and my TV API doesn't let me move to a particular frame (only to a timestamp). Is there: A) Any plan to add support to get/set marks in the Services API for a particular RecordedId? If not, would a patch that did that be accepted? It does. The mate-screensaver-command utility actually uses DBus messaging to control mate-screensaver. What happens if you change line 13 of dbus-screensaver.cpp from: m_interface(new QDBusInterface("org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver", "/ScreenSaver", "org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver", m_bus)) to m_interface(new QDBusInterface("org.mate.ScreenSaver", "/org/mate/ScreenSaver", "org.mate.ScreenSaver", m_bus)) i.e. change the service, path, and interface arguments to the QDBusInterface constructor to use the mate-specific ones. Standards. They just make things so much easier for everyone. It's good there are so many of them for screensaver control. As Gary B so often (and rightly) points out: http://www.xkcd.com/927/ FWIW, though, if using mate-specific DBus arguments works and it's decided not to include mate-specific code in MythTV, it would be simple to make a wrapper for mate-screensaver-command that works with the existing xscreensaver support in MythTV. (Basically just have create an executable script called xscreensaver-command that supports -version, such that it returns an error code if mate-screensaver isn't running, and -deactivate, such that it calls mate-screensaver-command -poke . I'd be happy to help with the wrapper if that's the direction Stuart decides to go.)
