Hmm.  After a bunch of updates today, --avf transcodes on my *buntu 
'trusty' box play in both vlc and Dragon Player. I tried BBC ONE and BBC 
FOUR.  The myth version is unchanged.

You found differences between channels; maybe it's just unpredictable.
