Jeff,

Did you also have a case when your backend took several seconds to write 
64kB of data?
Indeed my /sys/block/sdX/device/queue_depth is set to 1.
$ dmesg | grep -i ncq
[    1.824883] ata3.00: 7814037168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
[    2.133277] ata1.00: 1953525168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
[    2.133483] ata1.01: 1953525168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
[    2.133740] ata2.00: 1953525168 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)

I'll look at the bios settings next but I wanted to understand if you 
had the same symptoms.
