I'm not sure what is exactly meant by 'external channel changer', but I
use XBMC with the MythTV cmyth PVR client plugin as a frontend.

In the meantime, I reverted back to the 0.26 packages from Ubuntu 13.04
and an previous database dump. MythTV and XBMC is working, again.

Lincoln, your assumption about the external channel changer might be
correct. Calling mythavtest with an rtp-address argument still fails
even in the otherwise working 0.26 setup. So I guess this argument is
not to meant to be "a channel"? Running mythavtest 0.26 without any
parameters works and plays the currently active channel.
