Part is committed and part not.

I also use nouveau with a GeForce 8400 GS and this works great for me 
but I didnt have playback speed issue, just sync issues.
I have video sync set for DRI whereas previously for the prop nvidia 
drivers I used opengl sync which doesnt work in nouveau.

I have av sync issues in my windows build though. I suspect there are 
incompatibilities.
The effect is speedup and slowdown of motion making it jerky with about 
a 2 second period.
Annoying when watching motor racing and can see it in tickers.
