Nearly all of that stuff got removed to the wiki prior to the 0.24
release, in theory so users could keep them maintained, rather than
leave them to stagnate in the repository. You can still find them in
the old branches.

Those don't seem to line up with what you are describing. The PID file
is in the wrong place, and there is no mention of a pre-start script.
