What exactly are you referring to?  Mythbackend has no menu, nor a GUI 
of any sort.  Are you referring to mythtv-setup?  Issues with the GUI 
not rendering in mythtv-setup or mythfrontend are typically due to using 
the OpenGL painter on a system with broken OpenGL.  If you run:

'mythtv-setup -O ThemePainter=qt'

does it work reliably?
