I tested this against a recent trunk (r23758), and it appears to work.
Imported using:
  myth.rebuilddatabase.pl --ext avi --norename --dir /storage/recordings

I believe your problem may be what I reported (and attached a patch to fix)
in http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/8153 -- there is no OSD menu to turn
text subtitles on/off.

Can you try pressing the "T" key during playback to toggle the subtitles?
Alternatively, set the following option in Utilities/Setup > Setup > TV
Settings > Playback OSD > page 3

Always display closed captioning or subtitles

If enabled, captions will be displayed when playing back recordings or
watching live TV.  Closed Captioning can be turned on or off by
pressing "T" during playback.
