Yeah, after doing some more research I think that was a mistake.
The original font was Trebuchet and I knew the Liberation fonts
had the same font metrics as the Microsoft fonts starting with the
same letter so I chose Thorndale as the replacement. But according
to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/links/News.aspx?NID=1368
Thorndale is a replacement for Times New Roman, another font
starting with "T". Albany might be a better replacement, it has
the openness of Trebuchet with the font metrics of Arial. But
both Arial and Albany's bold characters are a heavier than the ones
in Trebuchet, so neither is 100% equivalent. A few websites say
Garuda is a Linux equivalent, but to my eyes they look nothing
alike and it appears to be badly hinted for intermediate sizes.

BTW I copied a lot of stuff from the non-wide version as it already
looked a lot better than MythCenter-wide.

I don't recall the actual change, but I didn't really make that many
changes, so you can probably find it. I just wanted to make it
visually clear which list you were in. The problem still persists in
the third column of the Program Finder, I just couldn't get it to
highlight the current item there.
