Users have been known to configure options when presented with them,
even if wrong to do so. Well designed UIs frequently hide/disable
incompatible options for precisely this reason.

Talking generally, is this a feature request for a patch I have yet to
write, or is this a dead end? At a time when "options-overload" is
trying to be kept under control, removing irrelevant options (not just
this specific one) seems sensible.
