I wasn't really considering it particularly transitory.  The new
version is already available on all distros (even FreeBSD has it), and
is shipping with production Ubuntu next month.  Transcoding is
currently broken with Ubuntu 9.10 beta because of this.

The only reason I was even proposing supporting the old version via
the changes to 'configure' was to not strand those people that
build-their-own myth but otherwise don't regularly upgrade other
things once they have a stable system.  The new version of transcode
is not available for older Ubuntu releases or older than Fedora 11.
