Well, it was simpler than that..

In my base.xml
I had misspelt a tag as <sate> instead of <state>

so the base.xml file wasn't loaded at all , fixing the spelling made
everything suddenly work ...

I could see any obvious errors in the output of mythfrontend unfortunately..
