In the meantime, if you configure "it" (whatever remote it is) as a 
keyboard (i.e. using a kernel input keyboard driver--something you can 
do with most remotes, these days, including ones that aren't keyboards 
(like my ATI Remote Wonder), so I'm assuming you can do it with your 
keyboard remote), it will just work.  So, don't use LIRC and it will 
work just fine for you (even in programs that don't support LIRC) with 
upper and lower case (where appropriate).
