[mythtv] MythTV with speech output

Hello everyone,

I’ve been using MythTV for a while now and I think it’s
excellent. I am very interested in modifying it to provide speech output. This
would obviously be useful for blind and partially sighted people but also several
other categories can be included, such as people with leaning difficulties and
young children (who develop verbal communications before the ability to read).
This speech output would ideally include:

-> announcements when the channel is changed

-> information about the current program upon a remote
button

-> information within the EPG to identify the selected
program, channel and time.

-> voice guidance through menus

-> audible switching of subtitles and audio description

-> reading of subtitles

And no doubt there are many more that will be added once I
make it and notice something is missing! There is one problem though - I have
never looked at the MythTV code. Having looked at how MythTV plug-ins work; it
would appear that it will take more that a plug-in to provide this
functionality. I think I am correct in saying that I’ll have to modify several
source files that make up mythfrontend. Is this correct? Or will it be the
libmythui library?

I intend to look at the MythTV code tomorrow and try to work
out the finer details involved but was wondering if anyone would be kind enough
to pass me a few pointers (no pun intended!), hints, tips or advice that might
save me some time and effort.

I saw in the mailing list archive that back in 2003 a guy
called Cory Hamma was also trying to develop a similar feature. Sadly his email
address does not seem to work anymore. Does anyone know if he made much
progress?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin
