I feel I should add that we don't like Trac being used for tracking patches or
features which will never be committed. There is a difference between patches
which have been in Trac for a long time and patches which won't ever make it
into the codebase.

Why? Well because every one of the devs has to read all of the mail generated
by Trac and that takes time better spent on code. Because it also clutters
trac making it harder to triage bugs and making accurate estimations of
outstanding issues for a release harder. There are better places for
unofficial patches or plugins to be posted and discussed. I'm sorry that a
user misguidedly told you to open a ticket, they were wrong.

If you need a further reason why we don't like such patches in trac, then it's
because appearing in the official tracker gives them some official validity in
the eyes of some users. No matter how many warnings you put on the patches,
they will inevitably result in related support requests to us, it's
unfortunate but true. We continually see people opening tickets or requesting
support for issues that eventually turn out to be caused by third party
patches.

We close and lock tickets all the time, you weren't being picked on. If Janne
hadn't closed the ticket then any one of the other devs or 'triage assistants'
would have done so. Would they have included an explanation? It's possible but
given your own acknowledgement of the unsupported nature of the patches, it
didn't seem necessary - you knew the patches wouldn't be committed or
supported.
