A little bit of an aside.

I've not had a chance to fully investigate but at first glance I think
I am right in saying that thumbgenerator will use dcraw to generate
the thumbnail as well. I've been having a poke around, I had intended
to tackle the problem Chad has solved, and have been using libexiv2
(http://www.exiv2.org/) to extract the preview embedded in the nef raw
files that my camera produces. This would seem to be ideal for
generating thumbnails. Also I discovered with this that these
particular raw files actually include a full resolution, albeit not at
the lowest compression, jpeg. This may actually be useful as an
alternative to converting the raw data if this is common to other raw

Anyway bit of a rambling email.
