For what it's worth I wrote just such a function for #4623. Take a  
look starting at line 262 of the 19997.sg.patch attachment. The  
QStringLists are in a map indexed by SG prefix because that's how  
Chris wanted them but it's easy enough for a caller to merge into one  
giant list. I used that patch for over a year & it works great etc.
