Isn't the creation of binary logs simply governed by the setting in
my.cnf?  In any case...the "log-bin" entry in my my.cnf file is
commented out and no binary logs are being written.

I've used both mysql 4 and 5 on four different Gentoo machines for
years with no quirks what so ever.
