Gentoo has some 'quirks' with respect to building mysql. In particular,
if you have the 'debug' USE flag set it will generate a completely
unusable mysql build; and the last time I checked it was configured
by default to fill your /var partition with multi-terabyte mysql db
replication logs. I recommend you build both mysql and mythtv without
ebuilds. Both these packages have ebuilds which encourage you to
shoot yourself in the foot.
