Nobody *quite* said that it would be useful if this was visible not
only in the UI menutree, but over playing programs as well -- possibly
by configuration option (if you're dumping to tape analog, which some
people still do, you don't want it to come up).

Was your proposed implementation something which would cover both
situations?
