Tried that (with /dev/cdrom). No verbosity.

My machine is similar:

% ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jan  8 09:22 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/hdd

% egrep cdrom /etc/fstab
/dev/cdrom      /cdrom  auto     
defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto          0  0

%

but I will try and make it identical, and test further.
P.S. What kernel? Any automount thingies running?

_That_ I can fix :-) Status change messages are now -v media.
