what i really don't understand is why all the OSD themes don't honour 
that setting.

not your fault and i'm really not complaining - now i know how to work 
around it i'm happy

my wild unsubstantiated theory is that it has something to do with the 
truetype font renderer.
but like i said, this is a wild theory.
