Hi James.  Thanks for the background info and recommendation.  Even
though you consider your alsa experience to be a disaster, I'm still
very glad you wrote the alsa output plugin.  It's allowed me to output
to PulseAudio with a minimal change.

So, here's another vote to include this patch.  I've been using it for
months.  Any other reasons to hold back?
