It was happening to me once on my workstation (not the regular BE/FE 
machine) and it was soo annoying. Luckily it disappeared after a while. 
Never found the reason - perhaps something with the X setup? It was 
definitely something related to my particular environment and as I was 
apt-get upgrading and reinstalling the nvidia driver it eventually went 
away.
