[mythtv] mythfrontend on apple tv

suggests that it can play 720p xvid files which according to the  
thread are all CPU decoded. So I don't know if that half answers you  
question.
What is very interesting is the bit a few pages on where they have  
managed to hack front row to run a custom app, this has the all  
important wife quieting effect.
