Another data point: I get the exact same results when viewing in
either Safari or Firefox on a Mac. (I haven't tried a PC yet.) The
ffmpeg process keeps on running on the server, so that's not the
problem.

Just guessing, but might the problem be be that ffmpeg is running
very slowly (around 10 fps) and the player isn't getting data fast
enough?

On a somewhat unrelated topic, should ffmpeg be able to handle
MPEG4-transcoded files? Mine, at least, can't; it errors-out. If this
is a fault of my version of ffmpeg, then I think the player should
give a meaningful error message in this case, rather than simply
doing nothing. It would prevent a lot of user head-scratching.
