http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3008 would have done what you wanted (not
the UI you want though). It is waiting for an update from the submitter to
support the other easily accessible metadata fields (and make the UI for
setting it better).

My own personal preference is for "folders" that are categories, year, etc.
with a dialog popup to switch (I don't like the side menus).
