For the record, Johan emailed me privately and this turns out to be the same 
samba/cifs bug as we've seen before.

Cifs reports the file has read/write permissions but when taglib tries to open 
the file as read/write it is denied. You can work around the problem by 
making sure the mount permissions match the share permissions (or something 
like that).

This is strictly speaking a Cifs bug and should be reported to the samba devs. 
The taglib devs were aware of the issue back in 2005 and referred it upstream 
to the samba bug tracker. Taglib should probably fall back to trying read 
only access if it fails to open the file in read/write mode, so if anyone 
seeing this problem wants the issue fixed you might suggest that as a work 
around to the taglib team.
