[mythtv] Custom Button Layout

Hi
I've used myth for years, but not fiddled it much.
I want to build a custom DVR

[record]	starts recording the composite in
[stop]		stops
[play]		plays

Can I easily change the button layout to achieve this.
Should I be looking at something else eg DVR.

A brief look at the xml layout hints at great possibilities, maybe a custom 
theme that does exactly what I want?
