Do you have also lost keys? I've been having same issues with that
given kernel. The problem in my case was, that in the kernel there is
another module called ir-kbd-i2c, wich handles the Hauppauge IR also.
While I had both this module loaded, and the lirc on, I had lost or
repeated keys. After compiling everything into modules, and not
loading ir-kbd-i2c, lirc started to work like a charm. Or you could
use only ir-kbd-i2c, and don't use lirc.

Don't worry about those 24 hours... it took me more than a week ;)
