[mythtv] Where is thumbnail generation done?

I have this problem that my frontend and backend regularly crash and I think
I've narrowed it down to thumbnail preview generation.  I'd like to look
into this more, but I'm afraid the MythTV architecture is a bit daunting.
Can anybody give me a hint about how thumbnails are generated?  From my
experience, it appears that both the frontend and backend are capable of
generating thumbnail previews (since they both crash).

Any hints or tips to help me track this down?
