Interesting. I started the program via the frontend's keyboard. It
started playing full screen via MPEG2VIDEO.
I then network controled to start the same program again and it went
straing to VLD (no new MPEG2VIDEO appeared).
When I repeated the network control command again, and subsequent
repeats I always get the pair - MPEG2VIDEO and then VLD for actual play
back appearing in the logs.
Not sure if the frontend is momentarily jumping back to the playbackbox
and thus displaying a preview inbetween which would explain the
MPEG2VIDEO entry..... I think this is unlikely seeing as it didn't
happen the first time when you start via frontend. I should stop
thinking outloud on email as I'll only be confusing issues now!!

CPU friendly makes no odds to the previously posted observations.
Hope this helps you work out the problem Daniel. I'm faily sure I've
unearthed some sort of race condition. I'm sure I have had some
successful VLD initialisations on the frontend - I actually had one just
now, but I think that was due to my memory getting starved and things
being a little slow to start and probably not triggering the race.
FWIW, I notice the preview video restarts every time a new dialog pops
up (e.g. the one with "play" or "play from..." options on it and the
"play from" dialog itelf which isn't nice on the eyes. Also it doesn't
adhere to cut points, but that is perhaps asking a bit much :p
