This whole subject came up because I wrote a patch to make it optional at the 
request of a user. Isaac said he'd rather see it removed altogether.

Now I'm in favour of removing it, but then I don't use it.

Maybe the functionality can somehow be combined with the popup keyboard. e.g. 
Pressing '1' moves the cursor around A, B and C on the keyboard etc. You 
would have to bring up popup keyboard for the number keys to behave in this 
way, so that would make things easier for those using a keyboard instead of a 
remote.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I like that idea. It should 
satisfy everyone.
