I don't want to start a slanging match either, truth is that I don't have the 
time or energy to really fight , even though I have strong views on the 
subject. Like you I used to be in the "more settings" camp, but after 
spending time giving support to users in IRC and at the linux events I've 
attended, I've changed my mind.

In my experience, only the smallest minority of users actually a setup which 
differs from the defaults and the number of possible configuration 
combinations causes immense confusion for  the rest. Far better to balance 
differing ideas on how things should work and to come up with clever ways to 
satisfy everyone, than to just throw in another setting. It's harder work and 
not nearly as simple to do in practise though.
