ok, i accept that is a configuration fault.
but i'm damned if i can find out what.

i've reverted to the radeon driver (from the closed source ATI one).
i've set up DisplaySize correctly. i've checked that if i change it,
then xdpyinfo shows the modification. however, the size that xdpyinfo
and xrandr -q shows is not identical to the one i specified.
however, no matter what size i specify, it seems to make no difference
to just about anything.

what really, really confuses me is that when i set the aspect ratio of
the displayed video to 4:3, the text looks fine. and yes, this is on a
1920x1200 laptop display (16:10).
i've set the kde panel to not grab part of the display.

i will continue to work on this
