Ok, it was actually easier than I thought :)

I've got a new patch which seems to fix the problem in a much cleaner 
way (by ensuring that PauseVideo only ever gets called from the decoder 
thread). See here:

I've only tested this very briefly (and it seems to work well), but I'll 
run with it for the next few days. If anyone else can test it too, that 
would be great.
