I dug back and found that this was changed to disable / enable 
passthrough as appropriate in trac #798 / svn 8294. This was even before 
the January testing we did on multi-channel timestretch and re-encoding 
to ac3, Mark.  I'm not sure if there were any more recent changes to the 
logic, but it still acted flaky when I used it until I made this patch.  
I've been running it for a week or so and it's worked well for me.
