Perhaps a separate script could be run by yourself on your files that 
"touches" the files to be the date/time found in the EXIF?

I know e.g. DigiKam has such a feature and I use that to allow me to 
order my photo's chronologically in DigiKam.

Not a brilliant solution I know but a valid work-around.
