Try to set the transition steps (fadeaway) in your osd xml file (e.g.
/usr/share/mythtv/themes/blueosd/osd.xml) to 0 at the top of this
file:

  <!-- if timeformat is set to 'FROMSETTINGS', it will use the time format
       specified in the general mythtv settings -->
  <timeformat>FROMSETTINGS</timeformat>
-  <fadeaway>0</fadeaway>
+  <fadeaway>30</fadeaway>

Helped a lot on my 600Mhz Via Epia
