This should work for me:
head -c 433885856 file.mpg | tail -c 10000000 > tmp.mpg

That'll give you a 10MB file, which should center right around the
failure.  That looks like about the minimum I need.  If that is too
much bandwidth for you let me know, and I'll see what I can do.
