[mythtv] FE/BE communications protocol query

I note that rewriting the protocol is an item on the devwiki.  

Has the idea of emulating SMTP already been considered?  That is: a
telnet-based command/response protocol, with numeric status replies.

I'm not sufficiently familiar with the *current* protocol to know if it
can be shoehorned into that format, with perhaps RFC-822 style
key/value mapping when necessary?  There are already libraries to deal
with both halves of that approach, I think.
