If it happened to be (way) faster in the RAM disk then I've just got an
idea how to implement it safely: run two instances of MySQL, one with
datastore in the RAM disk and the other one in standard /var/lib/...
Then set up MySQL mirroring (forgot the proper term but I mean the MySQL
support for master-slave setup). Master in RAM would deliver all data
quickly and if there was a write operation it would get saved to disk in
the slave MySQL :-) On boot up you'd want to copy all data from the
slave to master, obviously.
