FYI - I had trouble compiling with the new configure script on my
machine, I get:

gcc -c -mcpu=pentium4 -w -O2 -funroll-loops -fprefetch-loop-arrays -pipe
-fno-pie -D_REENTRANT -DPIC -fPIC  -DMMX -DUSING_IVTV -DUSING_DVB
-DUSING_XRANDR -D_GNU_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DPREFIX=\"/usr\"
-DHAVE_AV_CONFIG_H -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_THREAD_SUPPORT
-I/usr/qt/3/mkspecs/linux-g++ -I. -I.. -I../.. -I/usr/qt/3/include -o
postprocess.o libpostproc/postprocess.c

After a bit of Googling, It's some weird gcc error/bug that's cropped up
on this list (and others) before. I "fixed" it by adding
-fomit-frame-pointer to the CFLAGS, but that's not much help if you want
to debug.

I had some trouble with the distcc support too, but that's probably some
Gentoo'ism that I'm not inclined to investigate at the moment
(--disable-distcc to configure got me going)

for the record:

$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3.5  (Gentoo Linux 3.3.5-r1, ssp-3.3.2-3, pie-8.7.7.1)
