[mythtv] How can I debug the scheduler

Last night, my box didn't record something that I expected it to.
(the Program Guide tells me that the something of a
higher priority was being recorded, but nothing was)
Now, mythbackend --printsched lists upcoming recordings,
but I was half way through in the time frame of the recording,
and wanted to work out what the scheduler was smoking.
Short of adding lots of extra printf/VERBOSE, is there
any user way to poke around in the scheduler's grey matter?
