And don't rename them.  I've resigned myself to having my channels  
horribly out of order in the guide because renaming a channel means  
it will likely get deleted, along with the xmltv id field, and  
replaced again.

Yeah, I'm annoyed by this.  Guess its time to look at the code.   
Anyone have a problem with using the channel frequency field to store  
the channel number that the channel population routine uses?  As far  
as I can tell the frequency field is not used for anything else on  
DVB channels.
